Sow Feeding Schedule**
Post- Weaning:
-
Feed approximately 8 pounds or
more per day to first parity sows or those sows which have
experienced moderate to high weight loss. Feed older sows 6-8 pounds
to maintain condition.
-
Starting from the day the sow
or gilt is bred and until 21 days post-breeding, reduce feed to 4
pounds per day.
-
After day 21 post-breeding,
offer feed based on body condition [at least 4 to 5 pounds per day]
until day 90.
-
From day 90 until day 112,
increase the amount fed by 0.5 to 1 pound [based on body
condition]. Intake should be approximately 5-6 pounds per day.
Note: gilts may require special attention during this phase due to
mammary gland development from day 75 to 100. Do NOT
over-condition.
-
From day 112 until day 115,
reduce feed to 4 pounds per day [until she farrows].
|
Post-Farrowing:
When sows farrow, they often won't
consume much feed. However, it is advisable to offer small amounts of
feed for those willing to eat. Remove any left over feed and replace
with fresh feed 1-2 times per day.
Gradually increase the amount of
feed offered after the sow farrows so that by day 10-12 of lactation she
is on full feed.
Offer all she can eat from day
12 until weaning.
|
|
Notes:
-
Check all water nipples to
ensure that all sows and gilts have access to ample water [Flow rate
of 2 litres per minute]. Water quality should be analyzed and
monitored on a regular basis.
-
Always use good quality
grains.
-
Again, do not over condition
gilts. The mammary glands develop from day 75 - 100 post breeding.
Over conditioning at this stage may create long-term problems.

above recommendations are based on the latest Information and are simply
suggested values. Actual feeding levels should be determined on a herd by
herd basis taking both animal condition and nutritional quality of diet into
account. Individual
performances may vary **
